Learning Something New
A sprint to pick up Flutter development in just two weeks.
I studied computer science as a college student but ended up changing my degree to information systems. I did, however, finish with enough credits for a minor in CS. During my first job out of college I did do some lightweight coding, but that was the extent of my software engineering experience.
This past year as we shifted our focus for Pivvt, I started coding again and did most of our front end development in HTML and CSS, and dabbled with some Ruby on Rails.
We are looking at a new direction and with that, a friend of mine and I decided to do a hackathon last weekend. In order for me to provide value during the event, I looked into some front end options and decided to study Flutter, which would help us quickly create mobile (and web) apps using one coding language.
I found a few promising Flutter courses on Udemy and bought the classes to help me learn enough to be dangerous, in just two weeks! It’s fun to have a new challenge, and it hasn’t been easy.
I finished one full course, but it’s going to take time to get me fully proficient with the framework and development language. Sometimes you have to push yourself and pick up a new skill to accomplish what you need to do, and this was exactly the case.
We are still working on the app, and hopefully we will have something to show for it within the week.
